Peace by Deterrence

Minuteman silo, Weld County, CO.  Maintenance?

Controlled out of Cheyenne, there are silos scattered in Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado. Not all are ready to shoot – treaty stuff.

Free advice. Don’t go poking around them. The Air Force takes security seriously and those aren’t empty weapons you see. Add Blackhawk helicopters just minutes away and you could have a bad day.

Given the harsh winters in the area, that is not easy duty. Summers can be a bit on the warm side too. Check out Prairie Adventure for some great videos of the area’s weather.

Business today took me to NE Colorado (Phillips County) and then back to the Front Range (Larimer County), some 316 miles in very decent weather with little heavy wind.

One of our in-laws was a USAF Security guy who was stationed at Warren, and liked it there so much he stayed, married a local gal, and is finishing up his degree in American History at UNC so he can teach there.

Great guy, pretty conservative for a young 'un, and does NOT talk about his military service.

I haven't seen any Blackhawks flying around, just versions of the Huey, and a random Chinook or two. Air traffic is so sparse here compared to SoCal that I look up every time I hear an aircraft.

They may still be using Hueys. Doubt the security function rates too high on the Air Force budget scale.

Yep, they don't 'play' worth a damn... And you WILL go to jail, do not pass go... And that is a federal charge so your daddy ain't getting you out. :-)

Sometimes they come up for sale. I think it'd be neat to have an underground fortress.

Interior decor a tad "industrial".
