Advertising. I’m not against it, not at all. During my years
in the car biz spent a lot of money on it. What chafes my ass is disrespectful,
manipulative advertising.
I don’t own a television, and I don’t watch television. I
will be interested in a program, then comes eight to ten minutes of
commercials. By the time they are over, I’ve lost interest.
More and more the internet is being infested. OK, I will
live with some but when my screen goes totally a commercial and I have to
interact with the damned thing to be able to finish what I was reading, that
goes too far. Plus, they take too long to download.
Tonight I purged my sideboard of the worse offenders.
All in all one of the reasons I like books. No f^^king
intrusive commercials.
YMMV

I agree. Effing commercials do mostly nothing except piss me off. I have Adblock Plus on my computer and phone, free download. It helps a great deal.
I have adblock. Many site require you to turn it off.
I have adblock, too, and some sites ask you to turn it off to continue, that's when I turn off the site.
The trend that is driving me crazy is the pop up ads, the damn things are every where! I don't know who decides what they are putting out there, but they are trying way to hard to offend me, and succeeding greatly. Thankfully I have the right to choose who gets my hard earned dollars, and for damn sure it won't be them...
When I get a site that wants me to turn it off, I have a little trick I do. I click the stop button while the site is barely loaded. Time it just right and you can read whatever it is without the ad!! Sometimes I have to try a few times, but it usually works.

Agree!

Will try that.
100% in agreement. And haven't watched the "channel to market" TV for a decade. No loss.
Of course I agree. If I want to watch a movie, I DVR it and skim through commercials.
You aren't a Latter Day Luddite, and I'm to stubborn to change.
Too, damn it!
Fool: the western world would fall into chaos and despair without commercials. Way back when, would you ever have wanted to eat a bowl of Cap'n Crunch without seeing those commercials? Would you ever want to see the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet? I think not.
And what about Mikey? He'll eat anything, who knew he would like Life cereal. We ALL did, that's who.
I'm guessing that 'You deserve a break today." I'll let you figure that one out (HINT: it's an old McDonald's line for maybe 40 years ago).

There are as many theories about advertising as there are account reps extracting money from client. Most are bullshit. In my years in the car biz authorized expenditures close to seven figures.
I cared nothing for developing "brand awareness". My goal was to bring to the lot someone interested in purchasing a specific vehicle. Fuck lookie lous. Doubt I would have kept my position if my approach didn't work.
Most of what I see simply irritates people. Brand awareness? Yeah, aware that advertiser irritates me.
YMMV
