Readers of this blog know I’m enamored with steam
locomotives. Today the UP 4014 Big Boy came through town on its way home to
Cheyenne after the Southwest tour.
Let a pesky winter storm keep me away? I think not.
Doesn't look like you got as much snow as we did. Virginia Dale and Ted's Place got buried, from what I've read. The heaviest snow was in NW Fort Collins, and up in the mountains. The in-laws up off Whalerock in Rist Canyon got 40". Good thing he has some of his heavy equipment there!
drjim The snow here stopped close to noon. The streets around the tracks were passable. Where maintenance has cleared the sidewalks with a snowblower the snow is around 6-8". The weather does what it wants I guess but the terrain has a huge influence.
I would say cancelling your trip over was a wise decision.
Sounds like we got hit much harder than you did. The 22" on the backyard table matched up pretty closely to what I plowed on the sidewalk and driveway.
The DIL came by to pick up TLG (he stayed an extra night), and she couldn't drive her KIA Sportage with "AWD" up our cul de sac! The main street had been plowed, but not our little backwater off-to-the-side street.
I watched her spin the front tires, then the back tires, then all four at once ( ! ) before she gave up, so my wife and I walked TLG down the path I'd plowed.
drjim Testing cars for Roush we encountered that problem many times on the 10 mph corners on Hoosier Pass. The Prius I put 100k on driving a medical courier route had a traction control that couldn't be turned off. Stupid!
Turns out there's a button called "Auto Lock" you can toggle that locks the front and rear diffs together.
Manual says to use it ONLY in extremely low traction conditions, and to disengage it as soon as you get back on 'normal' roads.
Oh, well....the city had a road grader come through here last night and scrape our cul-de-sac curb-to-curb, just like I heard they were going to do on KRFC.
WSF, Glad the winter storm did not keep you away. We are about to receive the effects of the storm here near San Antonio, Texas tomorrow. It will be just rain and cool weather.
As to 4014, my wife and I went to see it on November 4th when it stopped just west of Hondo, Texas. WOW! That was a sight to see. Hope that UP does another tour through the Southwest to include the same Texas route.
