A favorite saying of my late father. Somewhere he is snorting and saying, "I tried to tell that kid".
So, ignoring an unusual sound led to the idler pulley failing and taking out the serpentine belt. $21 part turned into an $85 repair.
I'm getting older but not smarter.

WSF, I fully sympathize.

Pure laziness.
Ouch, and yeah, paying attention is good! Sigh...
BTDT!
So the total tab for idler and belt was $85 vs just $21 for the idler?

You would think I would learn.

$22 for the idler, $33 for the belt and $30 to a friend who did the work. I could have done it. Simple job. One bolt holds the coolant reservoir and windshield washer reservoir. Two bolts for the idler. Job goes much easier if you stretch the belt first. My method is to hook it to trailer hitch balls and gently pull it tight.
Just yesterday I was test driving a 1923 Ford Model T touring car that I had just restored: cruising at a break neck 31 mph, the rear end broke a tooth or something (bad noise back there), I will tear it apart today. I went through the entire car - except the rear end as it seemed OK, and did not check the oil level, probably something your dad would have suggested.
Crap. Grease is certainly cheaper than machinery.

That sucks.
LOL. Except when you apply it to firearms...too much might make it gunky. Too little is no bueno also. Sorry about your repairs.

Another of my father's sayings, "Poor people have poor ways".
Firearms? Crusader Arms Slipstream. Nothing better, IMO.
