Yesterday
found me 45 miles from home without my wallet and credit cards. Lesson
relearned; checklists are useless if you don’t use them.
Framed,
hanging next to my exterior door, is a checklist.
CHECKLIST
WALLET
MONEY
CLIP
GLASSES
KEYS
CELL
PHONE
ZIPPER!!!!
Next
to the Checklist is a small shelf where I put my keys, wallet, and glasses when
I come in. Too many times I’ve walked out wearing the glasses I wear when using
the computer. Once is more than enough crawling under my truck to get the “Hide
A Key” magnetic holder for the spare house key.
Once
in awhile I learn from my mistakes. There is now a small amount of cash stashed
in each vehicle.
And
you thought my blogger name is a joke?

I often do an equipment check - which my grandfather taught me. In the form of a cross...”spectacles, testicles, billfold and bottle”. People may think you’re praying and you don’t need to explain differently.

That works!
I guess I can claim the same adventures. I have done that more than once... sober, too.
I seem to remember LL's checklist from when I was much younger.....
PATRIARCHY!!!!
Y'all are talking about your testicles and I don't have any and it's NOT FAIR!!! I feel left out!!!
Coffeypot
That is your problem. No excuse when you are sober.

A useful trait.

Worse, you were raised to keep your knees together.
I have supplies in the trunk of my car. Water, a blanket, first aid, flares etc. I carry a backpack to and from work. A bit of food, medications etc. I can add stuff from the trunk to it if I end up having to walk somewhere. One can get stranded in the city, too.
Oh, and although I walk without a cane, I have that in my car. If I do end up having to walk more than a mile or two, I'll need it.

I have similar preparation in every vehicle that stay there.
If you are a doomsday prepper, sure, these things are absolutely necessary. But for the rest of us, all you need (besides your car keys) is a cell phone. Anymore, there is almost nowhere in the country that you can't get at least one bar on your signal strength. Dial 911 and there's a helicopter lowering down a harness for you. Checklists are ancient history now.
Well, maybe in Alaska, sure, there might not be a cell signal. Suggestion: don't go to Alaska. And if you do, stay in Fairbanks, Juneau, Nome is OK in the summer, or Ketchikan. That's it. You risk your life straying from these areas. In Alaska, those Kodiak and Grizzly bears have no respect for .44Magnum bullets, a huge bear getting shot by a .44 is akin to you and me getting bit by a mosquito. Unless you shoot them in the head, and that takes the nerve of an old west gunslinger, ice in your veins.

Good points, but......
I'm often in areas where the buffalo roam but my cell phone doesn't. The kit in my vehicles will keep me alive and functioning for 48 hours.
Anyone who puts the onus on a helicopter or 'them' or, well, anyone besides themselves to SAVE you may not be a realist. One has only to look at the latest in a long line of natural and unnatural disasters to realize that there's not a lot of help out there when EVERYONE is needing assistance at the same time. Much rather depend on myself.

Point!
Yep, STILL use the checklist... Watch, wallet, spectacles, testicles, keys...
Old NFO
My problem is remembering to use the checklist!
