Today my son and I walked around the battlefield. I found it interesting to see it through the eyes of a professional soldier. Here are pictures from all four sides of the monument.
Rather than me trying to tell the story please go here.

I haven't posted any pictures of the battlefield as today bears little resemblance to the conditions of the time of battle. An effort is being made to restore the vegetation (i.e. canebrakes) and other features (bogs, wetlands).
The terrain makes for a gentle stroll - nothing too steep. Might be a tad different for a soldier of that era with musket, equipment, and heavy wool uniform.

It's good to enjoy moments of history the way that you did with your son, and in due time when they are ready, with your grandchildren. Passing it on is a tradition that we all need to cultivate. Well done.
Yep, that is a classic battle... Morgan beat Tarleton there with a ragtag bunch of militia, a few regulars and a troop of cavalry...
Unfortunately I became aware of the USS Cowpens because of Holly Graf, thanks for filling me in on the reason the cruiser got her name.
There is so much history in this area and my son is becoming familiar with it. Too bad most people can't be bothered.
I would bet not five in a hundred in Colorado knows what the Ludlow Massacre was, or where the site is located.
All he asked of the Militia was fire three shots then fall back. The British charged and met the Colonial regulars. Much more than that of course. Brilliant use of terrain, a double envelopment, and the arrogance and over confidence of the British officers.
Even this landlubber has heard of Horrible Holly Graf courtesy of MilitaryCorruption.com. My profound sympathies for your being aboard.
Ack! You are in South Carolina! Great fun! Love the story.
I have been by there many times, but have never been able to stop and see the area. I will one day. It is on my bucket list. If you make it to the Atlanta area, I can show you some awesome stuff from the war that had Yankee interlopers tromping through my great city. From Big Shanty (Kennesaw), to the battle of Keenness Mountain, to the battle of Atlanta. A fun, full day.
SC is where my son settled after separating from the Army.
I'll hold you to that.
Yep, pride DID come before a BIG fall in Tarlton's case... :-)
