Mixed Messages

It was very pleasant last night. Several days without rain, a full moon, and the sweet smell of flowers and fresh foliage was in the air.

Then, the wind shifted bringing the reminder this is an agriculture town surrounded by feedlots, dairy farms, packing plants and a cheese factory.

What? You were expecting something profound?

Lived in Muskegon, Michigan for a time. When the wind blew one direction we got the smell of the paper mill. The other direction a foundry. The best one was when we lived in Rochester, New York when the wind would bring in the smell from the Ragu plant and the smell of spaghetti sauce.

But, having been raised a country boy I know those other aromas VERY well. Nothing like the smell of rotting cabbage in a field across the street from our family home.

Oh yeah, cattle pens... they STINK!

Season smell but a sugar beets processing facility will clear your sinuses.

We have many in the area. Plus all the manure gets hauled off and put on the fields.

I know what you mean. I live across the dirt road from a chicken farm with three enormous chicken buildings (or what ever they are called). Sometimes it is better not to sit outside and enjoy the evening breeze.

Brings to mind two of my favorite entertainers.

Brought tears to me eyes... much like a whiff of the chicken houses when they are cleaning them out.

Ha. I love the smell of cows. Why? Because I moved to town and dang it, no poop!
