Tough Tuesday

Some days my employer doesn't pay enough for the conditions we must drive in. Here WSF whines about his Election Day adventure.

A storm with freezing rain followed by snow blew through.  Took nearly 90 minutes to travel the 46 miles from our base in Loveland, CO to Cheyenne, WY. A large part of the travel was spent at 30 mph behind two CDOT snowplows. They operate in tandem, one in the left lane and one in the right on the Interstate. Traffic backs up for miles. Finally got around them and was rewarded with open road, as in the only vehicle on the road. Was able to maintain 45-50 mph to Cheyenne.

If there was any advantage in my predicament, it was now daylight and I could see the roads I usually drive on in the dark. Fine, until you hit fog.
North of Wheatland things improved.
Still to come, US 26.
Not far from this spot my route co-driver hit a herd of deer in dense fog and wiped out our car last Saturday. He wasn't hurt but the car was totaled. This was the car severe wind had customized.

South of Scottsbluff conditions improved.
DIA was still being impacted when I arrived.
Today the roads were clear and dry. This storm was typical. Short, severe, and moving East. Just hoping we don't get any five day blizzards this winter.

A Ramble II

A classic Albuquerque Low weather pattern going on right now. This one is bringing a shit load of snow. At the moment it has almost stalled. If this was summer, the rising heat from the High Plains would produce thunderstorms stalled above the Front Range. Note the moisture being pulled up from Texas. This is meeting colder moisture moving in from the Pacific. Add rising heat from the High Plains and you get the epic floods mentioned in "A Ramble".

Cheery news from the National Weather Service.

Potential good news for downstream water users. Hopefully Nebraska and Kansas won't get their ten year share in two weeks. They whine so loud when that happens.

Remember, in Colorado, "Whiskey is for drinking, water is for fighting".

Reflections

Thinking back on the nine or so hours spent in a ditch in a Prius hasn’t been fun. Humility isn’t my strong suit.

The spring storm wasn’t technically a blizzard but when your vehicle is slowly being buried by drifting snow the distinction is moot.

All these years of packing a winter survival pack paid off. Sure was glad to have that balaclava while out in 35+ gusting winds.

Cell phones are a great comfort.

The habit of keeping the fuel tank topped off paid off.

Our family trait of not quitting and pressing on can be over done. That road closed sign doesn’t apply just to pilgrims.

While I’ll drive a car with traction control that can’t be turned off if I’m paid to do so, I will never own one, ever. Had I been able to turn off the traction control, I could have gotten back on the road. I have years of experience getting unstuck and know several ways of doing so.

My ever loving sister will never let this incident be forgotten, ever.

Need to have reading material in the survival bags, both the winter and the summer bags.

Having the ability to pay a tow truck on the spot paid off.

Having a taste of what a refugee faces makes me determined to never be a refugee.

In spite of all our modern “progress”, Mother Nature can damn well kill you, and in short order.

Before summer arrives, need to unpack and check the contents of the summer survival bag. At the same time check the winter bag before putting it away.

I take no comfort in the hundreds of motorists who found themselves in my situation.  I’m better than that, damnit! (Yeah, I can hear my sister snort) The tow trucks are still pulling out abandoned vehicles.

Occasionally you come across the phrase, “Africa wins again!” Perhaps we should have our own phrase, “Winter wins again!”

Winter Storms

My sister is an insurance adjuster/investigator. Yesterday, she had a bizarre case in the Nebraska panhandle to investigate, and other follow up calls. With the weather moving in, decided to accompany her. Four hundred miles later, we made it home. We beat most of the weather, but this morning we have snow.

The case? A commercial driver going down a busy through street came upon a man face down in the street. The driver stopped, got out of his vehicle, and approached the man to see if he needed help. The man got up, ran to the driver’s vehicle, and head butted it. The man then ran off and has not been located.

Still, scene photographs needed to be taken, statements taken, and a police report obtained to complete the file. Why? In case the man decides to sue sometime in the future. Any wonder our insurance rates are high? Sisty doesn’t work for free.

(Note to Rev. Paul. Alaskans have no monopoly on fools on drugs/alcohol.)

The snow this morning is welcome as we are experiencing a mini drought. Ah, Colorado! A 1,000 year flood event followed by a drought.

We are on the fringe of the storm system with most of the weather to the North. So happy we made it back before the worst of the storm hit.

Fickle Weather

Two days ago, 79 degrees. Today, snowing. Forecast low tonight, 22 degrees.

From my natural gas heating bill.

This year, 43 Therms Used, Average daily temperature 39 degrees.
Last year, 12 Therms Used, Average daily temperature 54 degrees.

Today, studded tires are prohibited. Yeah, bite me!

Seems the jet stream has drifted South.

The good news is the snow is very moist and will ease the drought, for now.

Not So Bad

Back from a four day trip. Compared to much of the country, weather conditions were tame. First picture was taken just before passing a traffic stop. Temperature about minus 12. Wind 25 mph and gusting. The Minnesota Trooper was walking back to the window of a Chrysler 300. My question. Do you think the driver got a ticket or a warning?

South Dakota shut down I-29. Bunch of wimps. A few big drifts, zero visibility, and two buried highway patrol cars isn't a good reason. We just headed West and got behind the storm.

The South Dakota deer seem to be in good shape. They stood around on the highway like a flock of sheep. This was on Highway 47 just South of the White River. We saw hundreds of Pheasants and one moose where no moose should be; in the middle of the North Dakota plains.

Poem

Sent to me by a friend

It's winter in Kansas
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles and hour
At twenty five below

Oh how I love Kansas
When the snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut

Yes, the weather here is wonderful,
So, I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave Kansas
My ass is frozen to the ground

Colorado Welcome

First major Front Range snow storm of the Winter. Heavy, wet snow, that the kids love; it makes great snowmen. Not so much fun for the adults. No fun at all for anyone driving where the wind is blowing hard.

After shoveling snow you need to inoculate against the bite of the notorious Colorado Snow Snake! Pictured is my favorite anti venom. Some ignorant pilgrims deny jackalopes and snow snakes but that is my story and I am sticking to it!.

The selfish part of me hopes this storm is bad enough for me to be called out to plow. That will boost the, "Spoil the grand kids rotten at Christmas" fund.

Damn Pilgrims - Winter Driving

We are approaching the season of local frustration with our flatlander visitors and recent arrivals driving in our winter wonderland. Here is your first tip; GET OUT OF THE WAY! Stay in the right lane, use pullouts, and know your limitations. Locals have the tires, the experience and the need to get to jobs, day care, etc. Enjoy your experience, be safe, but have some consideration. If your safe speed is 30 mph, the truck in front of you is doing 28 mph, then you DO NOT need to pass him when the safe speed for the locals is 50 mph in the left hand lane. KEEP RIGHT!

Your second tip is this: Don't drive in a blizzard if you have never done it before. I-80 across Western Nebraska and Wyoming is a killer in a blizzard.

Your third tip is this: When your fuel gauge is on one half, you are empty. Don't pass a fuel stop if your tank is at one half or below. Avalanche and wrecks can leave you parked for hours in the middle of nowhere.

I imagine this whole rant is a waste of bandwidth but it makes me feel better.

Accident Alert

First real storm this winter and the transplants are learning winter driving. The "bulletproofed" AWD/4x4 drivers are relearning. This is good for the vegetation, wild life, tow truck drivers, body shops and insurance adjusters. So happy I don't need to go out today.
