What Winter?

We received our first snow that didn’t immediately melt away. Climate Change! Raise taxes! Reality is we need a lot more moisture for next summer’s needs. Will we get it? This area is a semi arid high desert.

Banner

He isn’t pleased with the temperature and snow. 17° on the balcony and overcast skies keeps him from his morning nap in the sun. Snow gets between his toes. The up side for me is he quickly takes care of business outside.

Wyoming

They are having a harder winter with all three Interstate Highways (I-80, I-25, I-90) seeing multiple truck wrecks and intermittent closures. Many of the secondary highways have been worse.

Parking Lot Hazard

Windows 11

The struggle continues with myself inflicted aggravation. My HP with Windows 7 is going on ten years and will, at some point, die. Not being DrJim and other tech savvy people, I won’t try to fix it.

I bit the bullet and bought another HP with Windows 11 and am not having fun learning how to use it. Worse, I’m now forced to read instructions! Bah humbug!

Life has taught me it is best to have your backup in place before you need it. As my blog title indicates I too often ignore those lessons.

 But, but, the “Narrative”!!!!

Didn’t expect this from M.I.T., one of Satan’s stepchildren.

As always, YMMV

Winter Weather

Weather forecast was correct, so far. A blanket of wet, heavy snow fell overnight. Calm, until around 0745, but now we have wind. That may be a blessing as the trees are now shedding their snow load.

Our power was out for about five minutes and the dog and I live in an all electric building on the third floor. My knees don’t like stairs. Worse, the coffee pot is electric as is the stove!

Some enjoy romping in the snow (for about five minutes).

My concern is the wind along with more snow. It could make for an interesting Sunday. Since the forecast has been correct so far, let it be accurate going forward. Tomorrow is forecasted to be clear (sort of).

For now, Banner and I are snug, dry and warm with no reason to brave the roads.

UPDATE: Power keeps going off then coming back on in minutes. As much as I loath Xcel as a company, my admiration for their people in the field is exactly opposite.

Snowmobiles

Challenged again to tell a story not involving politics. Growing up in Northwest Colorado in the late 50’s, early 60’s, was around when snowmobiles became popular in the area.

Snowmobiles had a profound impact on the social life of the area. People were getting out and being active; interacting with their neighbors instead of hunkering down and surviving the winter. Lots of clubs formed and lots of trail riding. By necessity, many became snowmobile mechanics. Reliability was an issue, much like a Harley Davidson MC.

One unfortunate individual, now passed, became something of a legend. He really didn’t want the fame. First, he got his heavy cleated double track stuck in a combination of sagebrush and snow, while solo. He taped the throttle partially open then got in front and tugged on the skis. Worked well. The machine gained purchase, drove over him, and went away at partial throttle.
The owner waded along the track until he came upon the machine on its side in a gully, still running. Somehow he managed to right the machine. Deciding he had enough fun for one day, he returned to his truck.

His method of transport was loading the machine in his truck using a homemade plywood ramp. The system worked well when he remembered to secure the ramp to the truck. Again, it was not his day. Getting a good run into the ramp, he started up and the ramp slipped. The snowmobile went under the truck and the rider over the windshield and belly first into the back of the pickup.

Knocked unconscious, he was fortunate others came along and transported him to the local hospital. To my knowledge, he continued to ride. Hopefully, with a little more forethought.

Poem

Sent to me by a friend

It's winter in Kansas
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles and hour
At twenty five below

Oh how I love Kansas
When the snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut

Yes, the weather here is wonderful,
So, I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave Kansas
My ass is frozen to the ground

Cousin' Poem: Winter in Coloado

This poem was sent to me by a cousin.

It's winter in Colorado,
And the gentle breezes blow,
Seventy miles an hour,
At twenty five below.

Oh, how I love Colorado,
When the snow's up to your butt.
You take a breath of winter,
And your nose gets frozen shut.

Yes, the weather here is wonderful,
So I guess I'll hang around.
I could never leave Colorado
'Cause I'm frozen to the ground.
