Among the myriad rules, regulations and dictates that complicate our lives and increase costs everywhere are “water saving” low flush toilets. One is in my apartment. How much water is saved when the damn thing needs to be flushed three times?

Car Story

Glue, locks and a Dodge Viper. This is probably a repeat.

 1993 my manager at the used car lot (show us your cocks story) got fired and the omens weren’t good for me. Up I -405 in Bellevue WA I got hired at the Dodge store while the GM was on vacation. He was not pleased when he returned. His problem? He didn’t hire me and I was selling two vehicles every three to four days while not adhering to his “system”.

 The Viper had just arrived and he foolishly put up a prize; the top salesman got to drive the Viper for a day.  That month I beat his house mouse by three cars. He was beside himself when I picked up the Viper on my day off. I drove it up I-90 to the Snoqualmie Pass summit and back to the store. Dropping it off I remarked, “Just another car”. When the management started messing with my pay I moved on.

 The manager, Bart Moss, was a big water skiing fanatic. He would go to Lake Sammamish at 5 am when the water was “flat”.  The ass kissers would meet him there and they would have workplace bonding. How pleased the folks with lakefront property might feel seemly didn’t matter. I gave it six weeks then went to the parking lot and squirted glue into all the door locks of all their vehicles while they were recreating. Well yes, WSF is evil. Fuck with me and I will fuck you over.

 I didn’t tarry, needing to open a small pot lot I’d been hired to manage.

 Side note: The Viper was a blast for about an hour and a half. After that, the parts bin engineering became increasingly noticeable. Also, my courting tackle didn’t get any bigger.

 MOPAR impressions. In that era I always thought Dodge was ahead of the game in terms of design. The Intrepid, with the cab forward design, was far superior to Ford and GMC. The full sized pickup redesign was a game changer. The weakness was Chrysler went cheap on the details. I won’t go into details; ancient history now. Their one success was the Dakota. Needing a small pickup, the Dakota was a Dodge Regis cop car chassis with a pickup bed and the rest 20 year old parts bin left overs. It was a decent truck, especially compared to the Toyota T100. That disaster had Toyota giving dealers a hidden $4,000 cash bonus to help move them.

For grumpy old retired iron movers like me, this is why you better do all your own research because the likelihood of the person across from you knows anything about what they are selling are nil.

Late 1990’s had a couple come in wanting to buy an F-150 with a 5.8 V-8, manual transmission, to pull a travel trailer. They had a folder full of information and “knew what they wanted”. I started asking questions? How much did the trailer weigh? Whipped out the brochure and showed me. Pointed out that was dry weight, water alone added 8+ lbs. per gallon, etc. They left, very unhappy. Next weekend they were back. Seems they had talked to people who had RVs. They left with a F-250 extra cab, automatic transmission, and a 7.5 V-8. At the time Ford rated the automatic tow capacity higher than a manual. P.S. We didn’t cheap sell the truck.

My past caught up with me again. While having my tires rotated, another customer starting petting Banner, then said he recognized me! A legal immigrant from Kenya, we sold him a Kia in 2002. He is now a naturalized citizen, speaks better English than me, and has been on his job now going on ten years.

The cost of illegal aliens – personal

Sometimes there will be six levels of separation, but always there is a connection. This is a very personal account of that connection. Long, I’m putting it here for people associated with me to read who might otherwise not want to hear it from me. If others find it of interest, so much the better.

 Illegal aliens indirectly led to my youngest son’s death.

A high school forced (1) dropout, he worked his way to being a master plumber by the time he was twenty.

With two children, he married a woman with two children and they lived in the Albuquerque, NM area where he was gainfully employed. A change in building codes allowed anyone to work as a plumber, and lack of enforcement allowed builders to hire illegal’s, pay them cash, and quickly force legitimate contractors out of business. My son, seeing the writing on the wall, joined the Army and became a Medic.

In Basic, he slipped on an obstacle course and badly sprained his left ankle. No quitter, he sucked it up and kept on. By the end of his tour in Kandahar, he was wearing a support boot. Eventually the Army gave him an 80% disability, later increased to 100%, discharge. As a civilian he worked as an EMT until he was physically unable to continue.

The ankle developed sepsis and he knew the answer was amputation. The Charleston, SC Veterans Administration doctors kept stalling. He was managing the pain with morphine. With a wife and now five children, he needed to continue working. One St Patrick’s Day, he and his wife were out with friends and he had a few alcohol beverages. Once home, he passed away during the early morning hours. Likely cause?  The combination of morphine and alcohol.

Let me be clear. He used morphine to maintain, not to get high. He did enjoy adult beverages.

Back to the top, he likely would never have joined the military had his plumbing career not been destroyed by the economics of illegal aliens.

Let us address compassion. Aliens are people, yes. Why are they coming here? To make a better life, for them, is their motivation. Do they care about the country they are coming to? I doubt it. They don’t assimilate, they keep their national identity, and they have contempt for our laws and values. Driver license, car insurance? Why?

Are they escaping a bad place? Probably. Sucks to be them. Why don’t they pay the cost to fix their home countries?

We can’t fix the world.

Living in Colorado. Despite Californication, traffic, and miles of ugly two story houses on postage sized lots, the vistas remain. While hanging paper the other day, the air was crystal clear, the Front Range snow covered, the sun was shining, and just a few high cirrus clouds were over the mountains. Just looking at the mountains lifted my spirits.

A few days earlier an assignment took me 130 miles east in the high plains. There is much to see if you know to look and the land stretches seemingly forever.

 Perhaps these are, “stop and smell the roses”, moments?

 Along that line, Polis and fellow thieves are forecasting a budget shortfall while several agencies are sitting on previously allocated funds that have not been spent.

WSF gets racist

Big rig truck driving is a tough job. Truck companies have a tough time hiring drivers. Increasingly long haul truck drivers are immigrants with limited, or no, English. Articles like this one ignore that factor.

Reality

The only hint is one line.

Bowes noted that it’s only a half-joke that some of the drivers who don’t know the right procedures for mounting chains are seen on roadsides and chain stations in shorts and sandals in winter weather.

Also mentioned are understaffed State Patrol officers.

The same situation exists along I-80 in Wyoming compounded by low wages for snow plow drivers resulting in not enough snow plows.

OK, WSF, are you saying immigrants can’t drive trucks? No, immigrants aren’t trained, or prepared, for the loads and highways they are expected to traverse.

 I watch several YouTube channels involving tow companies working wrecks. Time after time the drivers have limited English.

 Disclaimer: Anyone who hired WSF to drive anything bigger than a one ton flatbed was foolish. One employer banned me from pulling trailers. A man should know his limitations. Sisty can fill you in on a box truck and low bridge in Casper.

Medical Care Rant

I’ve no major complaints about the medical care I’ve received. What I do complain about is just getting a @#$# appointment. For the patience impaired, such as myself, the endless, “Please listen to all the options………..”. Finally here the option I want and press the number. Now I hear again, “You have reached the …..Department. Please listen to the………… Aarg!

I begin to question whether I need the medical attention. Too often I just take two acetaminophen and say, “F**k it”.

Drought

Growing in an agriculture environment, the weather and precipitation are always in the forefront of my mind. Last winter we had above average moisture. This year is a drought in northeast Colorado. This is bad news for dry land farmers and not good for wildlife.

 At a personal level it has been a boon for me doing my paper hanging work. No icy steps and sidewalks to contend with.

 The southern part of Colorado is having a good snow year. The mountains are seeing a lot of snow so the runoff that supplies our drinking water should be safe.

 The new Chimney Hollow reservoir should be completed enough to capture this spring’s runoff which is good news for us locally bet not for those downstream of the South Platte River in Nebraska.

 Remember, in Colorado, whiskey is for drinking and water is for fighting. As one rural rancher stated, “It wasn’t until I was elected as a state senator that I learned, goddmandenverwaterboard, wasn’t one word”.
