Car Story

I screwed the pooch, and got fired. The bear ate.

 We made a deal without the trade physically present. While not too common, deals are made based on the customer’s word. We did one and I went 120 miles South to deliver the truck and get the trade. First problem, the trade had far more miles on it. Second, the customer’s family was there but he wasn’t and had not signed the title transfer. In a moment of stupidity I had one of his kids sign.

 When I got the trade back, the deal fell apart and the owner’s wife, Gail Felton, insisted I be fired. Little Hitler, aka Steve Lance, fired me.

 My response was, “Sometime you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you”.

 About a year later I ran into Steve and his wife leaving a supermarket.  He hollered, “Hey, come work for me”.

 What about Gail Felton?”.

 “Fuck her, I bought the place”.

Over the next ten years, I would get pissed and quit or he would get pissed and fire me. It became a standing joke.

To this day, Steve likes to tell others about the bear remark.

Not a car sales story but amusing

This is not a car story but inspired by a picture of LL giving Chinese kids candy.

 While my youngest was at Kandahar with the 1/4^th ID, Jolly Rancher hard candies were available for the troops to give to kids. Soldiers, being soldiers, adapt.

 In a care package I sent him I included, on a whim, a wrist rocket.

This was soon in service giving candy to kids. As they drove past civilians, the kids liked to throw rocks at them. In response, the turret gunner would give the kids  Jolly Rancher candy via the wrist rocket.

Soldier inspired win/win civil engagement!

Though I’ve been out of the car biz now for years, I still follow what is going on and check  many of the, “how to buy a car” YouTubers and  especially, the comments. I’m not surprised that the buyers still hate the dealers and are still outraged dealers still want to make a profit. They want, want, and want the lowest out the door price delivered to their computer.

 This is a hard truth. The dealership doesn’t need to prove they have cars to sell. The buyer needs to prove they can buy. Most can’t, buy. What they can do is suck up a commissioned salesperson’s time with no return to the salesperson. Cost to the “buyer”?

 My response to the people pontificating about how car dealerships should operate was uniform. Buy a dealership and run it the way you want.

 Who Needs to Read English?

The current uproar about unqualified drivers of big rigs brings to mind being stationed in Europe sixty years ago. We soldiers were required to have a USAREUR specific driver’s license. We spent two days learning road signs and laws. Passing grade required was 98%.

Passing was not optional. Anyone who has been in the military remembers what failing “not optional” brought on you.

Here in the USA? A sample of road signs you just might need to be able to read while driving a big rig.

The mechanic who has taken care of my vehicles has died. He was also a friend. He was bothered by severe headaches in recent years.

 Why in the world, WSF, did you pay $80-90 for an oil change?

 My Dad drummed into all our heads, “Grease is cheaper than machinery”. I’m a believer in the best lubricants and filters. John was far more than a “technician”, he was a mechanic. He went over my car from bumper to bumper looking for problems every time it was in his shop.

 Not being able to do my own maintenance and repairs on my car is an aggravations; part of aging.  Knowing bullshit when you hear it is one of the benefits of knowing how to maintain and repair a vehicle, old age be damned.

 I will switch over to Sisty’s proven shop but, I will miss John.

Good friends own a ranch twenty minutes from downtown Steamboat Springs. It has been in the same family for 112 years. Rather than sell out for big money, they found a way to protect their heritage. Recently, they posted the methods they used.

A topic on LL’s Virtual Mirage brought back a fond memory. A family owned used car operation had several members employed by a son who owned the business. The patriarch had twelve children. All the men were handsome and the ugliest daughter was drop dead gorgeous. They were smart, productive, and beautiful. All business on the job; their personal lives were kept separate. No flirting. 

One daughter was getting married and a bachelorette pub crawl was in full speed. They were being transported around in a large limo.

 Three of us were working that evening and the limo pulled up. Several intoxicated voices called out,

 “Show us your cocks, show us your cocks!”

 One salesman looked at the limo and said,

 “Hey, my wife is in that car”.

 He then looked at the other salesman and me in further shock. We had dropped our pants and were cheered by the limo occupants. He was not amused.

Car Sales Story (Repeat)

Being weird enough to stand out in a bunch of car salespeople, means being beyond weird. Mel met that standard. Always wearing a porky pie hat, his home was in the hills above Fall City, WA. He bragged that he never washed his vehicle from the day he acquired it until the day he sold it.

 We were working an offsite sale. Mel had parked his Diesel 4x4 VW Rabbit Pickup near the car prep area. Few groups are more capable of mischief than bored car salesmen.

 A collection was taken up and the, at the time idle, wash crew/detailers with cash in hand went to work on Mel’s VW. They slim jimed the lock and went to work on the inside, cleaning windows, the dash, bagging trash and giving the interior a complete vacuuming. Outside, a wash and dry was followed up with tire shine. The VW was ‘front line ready”.

 When Mel returned it took him several minutes to recognize his VW.

“Where is my truck”, an irritated Mel asked? He was standing beside it at the moment.

A clue was salesmen laughing. Mel was not amused.

My past caught up with me again. While having my tires rotated, another customer starting petting Banner, then said he recognized me! A legal immigrant from Kenya, we sold him a Kia in 2002. He is now a naturalized citizen, speaks better English than me, and has been on his job now going on ten years.

The cost of illegal aliens – personal

Sometimes there will be six levels of separation, but always there is a connection. This is a very personal account of that connection. Long, I’m putting it here for people associated with me to read who might otherwise not want to hear it from me. If others find it of interest, so much the better.

 Illegal aliens indirectly led to my youngest son’s death.

A high school forced (1) dropout, he worked his way to being a master plumber by the time he was twenty.

With two children, he married a woman with two children and they lived in the Albuquerque, NM area where he was gainfully employed. A change in building codes allowed anyone to work as a plumber, and lack of enforcement allowed builders to hire illegal’s, pay them cash, and quickly force legitimate contractors out of business. My son, seeing the writing on the wall, joined the Army and became a Medic.

In Basic, he slipped on an obstacle course and badly sprained his left ankle. No quitter, he sucked it up and kept on. By the end of his tour in Kandahar, he was wearing a support boot. Eventually the Army gave him an 80% disability, later increased to 100%, discharge. As a civilian he worked as an EMT until he was physically unable to continue.

The ankle developed sepsis and he knew the answer was amputation. The Charleston, SC Veterans Administration doctors kept stalling. He was managing the pain with morphine. With a wife and now five children, he needed to continue working. One St Patrick’s Day, he and his wife were out with friends and he had a few alcohol beverages. Once home, he passed away during the early morning hours. Likely cause?  The combination of morphine and alcohol.

Let me be clear. He used morphine to maintain, not to get high. He did enjoy adult beverages.

Back to the top, he likely would never have joined the military had his plumbing career not been destroyed by the economics of illegal aliens.

Let us address compassion. Aliens are people, yes. Why are they coming here? To make a better life, for them, is their motivation. Do they care about the country they are coming to? I doubt it. They don’t assimilate, they keep their national identity, and they have contempt for our laws and values. Driver license, car insurance? Why?

Are they escaping a bad place? Probably. Sucks to be them. Why don’t they pay the cost to fix their home countries?

We can’t fix the world.
