I don’t have a dog in the hunt. After developing macular degeneration I gave away all my long arms, those not lost in the boating accident, to those who would use them.  What I used back in the day was a .30-40 Kraig, .30-30 Model 94, a .308 Mannlicher and a 20 gauge Stevens single shot.

My absolute favorite? The M1 Garand I shot in basic training. Not pretty, probably had been rebuilt many times, but I hit what I aimed at. Qualifying, I missed one target for sure, 25 yards, 5 second duration, went high. The other target, 350 yards, 10 second duration, the scorer missed because of the heavy rain. I damn well hit that target.

The rifle I disliked, intensely, was the M-14 I carried in Germany. I’ve since learned two manufactures made them. One used a M14 production line modified from M1s. The other built a new line from scratch. The one I was issued was a p.o.s. Accurate, yes. Reliable, no.

High Country Ramble

With a rare moment with no  pressing demands my trip to Moffat County and the family gathering allowed me to travel two summer only Wyoming roads. First was the Snowy Range highway between Laramie and Encampment. Saw a nice sized moose near the summit. I’ve seen few moose in my life but he seemed fairly large.

 These fences make sense once you consider digging post holes in the rocky ground found here.

The second was Battle Mountain Pass from Encampment to Baggs.

Sunbeam, CO

Birthplace of my father. His maternal grandfather operated a toll bridge there. Not much left of it but hand built around 1900 what still stands impresses me.

 Side note. My father’s address when he was drafted in WWII was Skull Creek, CO. He spoke of questioning looks from fellow service members and ended up with the nickname, “Sunshine”.

 The roads North to Interstate 80 in Wyoming are mainly paved and the scenery worth the trip. Being prepared is prudent.

Juniper Springs

An all too common fate for many places is closure after the owners retire/die. Many cousins grew up swimming here so 9/2 we convoyed to the springs with me providing a ride for three. Not much left but a few area volunteers try to keep the pools intact.

Military Service and Patriotism

A comment I made at LL’s blog led to more thought.

In our youth my cousins and I listened to our Great Uncle and WWII veteran uncles swapping war stories at family gatherings. I know I, and I suspect several cousins, were motivated to join the military so that we could take an active part of those sessions. Further, we looked up to those men and wanted their acceptance and approval.

Excluding the Coast Guard, I have cousins that have served in all branches. One son was an Army Medic and his son, a 5^th Generation soldier, is in the South Carolina National Guard.

Last weekend at the family gathering there were three Marines, two Sea Bees, two Combat Engineers and one Destroyer sailor. All cousins or married to cousins.

I doubt any of us care to be “thanked for our service”. It was something we did because it was expected.

Promoting hysteria, Iowa State University employees have developed at ‘scientific’ way for forecasting future mass shootings. They build on data collected by the “Violence Project”. Oh the horror! Decades of gradual warming due to human-caused climate change and an El Niño in the Pacific Ocean nudged global ocean temperatures to record levels in 2023.

Click bait lead to set the ‘proper’ tone. Human caused is ‘settled science’.  No mention that long term temperature recording didn’t start until just after the end of the Little Ice Age (1300 – 1850) in North America. Pacific Ocean record keeping started sometime around 1910 and only in a few places (LaJolla, CA for example). Does anyone remember GIGO? (Garbage in, Garbage out)

Globull Warming

Just finished the fourth application today of shovel and broom to the several inches of global warming on the deck, stairs, walks, and vehicles. So far, this has been a dry winter on the plains and this moisture is needed to fill local aquifers and irrigation reservoirs.

As storms go, this is nothing for this area. Guess it is the other parts of the country getting hammered along with Alberta. Still, it validates why I keep a 4x4 on hand.

Over Educated Bone Heads

Horrors, the Pika rodent isn’t being added to the Endangered Species List! Woe is the “whistle pig”.

A few facts. The Pika has evolved to live in 78 degree or colder climates. Their territory is at or above timberline in mountainous terrain. Summer temperatures are rising in their habitat. In the summer they gather plants and dry them on rocks; then store the dry plants deep in the rocks. During the winter, they live deep under the snow in the rocks.

The number of humans tramping across Pika country is damn small. Baring large scale mining operations starting up, there is little reason to fear human encroachment. Just how in the hell are we supposed to protect the little darlings? Air condition the rocks?

Sadly, many eco freaks will be deprived of well paid positions to study and mitigate the “problem”. Worse, they may need to find real jobs! Join their fellow citizens who’s vocation isn’t their avocation.

Here is the solution! Sue the sun! This pesky raise in the surface temperature is most annoying. Toss in Gaia; is it really necessary to have a wobble every 20,000 years or so? We certainly have enough trial lawyers to bring suit. Keep them busy with this and they won’t have time to screw up other activities or go after sarcastic blog writers.
