Will El Nino Save Us?

Severe Drought

The current  picture. By available capacity, Blue Mountain Reservoir is Colorado’s largest. The dam was built at the head of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

The monsoons that have blessed Arizona have finally shifted towards SW Colorado. It is probably too late for most of the fish.

Yawn, Colorado Politics

Colorado has a “robust” citizen initiative process. The idea is to place laws on the ballot for voters to decide (unless the (P)regressives don’t like them or the courts don’t approve, same thing – WSF sarcasm). Somewhere around 13 will be on the midterm ballot depending on where you live. One, favored by (P)regressives may have shortcomings. No problem, Jabba the Hut’s daughter is Secretary of State.

Car Story

Revenge is a dish best tasted cold.

One rainy afternoon Sound Ford, Renton WA had a lake growing at the North entrance due to a plugged storm drain. Redwood “beauty bark” was popular at the time and was sovereign for blocking storm drains.

I was wearing a trench coat and hat while working to unblock the drain when a driver deliberately moved over and completely soaked me with a wave of dirty water from his tires. Hah hah!

I was able to look around in time to see a very distinctive vehicle, a  Dodge Lil Red Express complete with the optional wood sideboards. While I didn’t get the plate number I did note it was a personalized plate.

My joy was great when I drove by the Denny’s Restaurant down the street twenty minutes later on my way home to get dry clothing. Sitting in the parking lot was the very same truck! Not now Tonto, that is a local, you have seen it around, and timing is everything.

About two week later the owner came out of a bar at closing time, rainy night, to find all four tires flat. Unless he had four spare valve stem cores, the tires stayed flat until the morning when the parts store opened.

A note on tactics. Step one, open the cores just enough to let out the air with minimal noise. Step two, return in 45 minutes to finish removing the cores after the tires were completely deflated. After step two, leave!

As always, YMMV

Farmers Market, Honey

We now have the seasonal opening of our local Farmers Market every Saturday.

Found some local honey there last Saturday.

I enjoy a large spoonful of honey in my coffee. I find it helps control allergies. Like some of my other health practices, many will scoff. Do you think I care?

I prefer being able to look directly into the eyes of the husband/wife team that not only gathered the honey but process it in their home. I know the location of the hives so know it is a local source.

Not cheap at $40 a quart but I’m worth it and it supports a local farmer with no middle man.

That stuff DOES work if it's actually local. I do the same thing down here.

Banner's Joy

Our city has a four acre dog park Banner loves. He visited this morning along with at least a dozen other dogs. Smart dog! Starts getting excited the moment I turn onto the F Street road.

He will mingle with other dogs if they come up to him but would rather patrol the fence. One lap around is enough to wear him out.

Eating grass is something he loves to do. Since he gets chlorophyll liquid on his food every other day I don’t think it is a nourishment need. At his last home he had to fight two other dogs for food and may have eaten grass there because of hunger. The park is the only place I allow him to eat grass as I know the maintenance people never spray weed killer.

Occasionally, but not today, he will find something to roll in.While he mingles with other dogs, I mingle with some of the ladies.

                                                                            Honey

My favorite beekeeper company was at the Farmers Market today and I was able to buy a one gallon jug of raw local flowers honey. That should last me for a few months. I put honey in my coffee. It helps with allergies, I believe. The theory is the bee’s pickup minute amounts of pollen that mixes into the honey. Taking a couple of spoonfuls of honey a day boosts your immune system.

Lottery

The profits from the Colorado Lottery are earmarked for recreation projects. Along the Cache la Poudre River, extensive hard surface trails are being built. Eventually the trail system will extend from Fort Collins to Greeley. The system sees a lot of use. Runners, bicyclists, walkers, and dog walkers are out most days excepting blizzards. After major storms the trails are plowed. The Greeley Police Department has a four person bicycle patrol unit for the trail system.
