Happy Birthday, Dad

Today would have been my father's 92 birthday. Sadly, he passed at 64.

We had a strained relationship. What I most admire was at age 60 he started reinventing himself. It was as though he was taking each facet of his makeup and thoroughly examining it.Most parts he kept but some he discarded.

My biggest regret is we didn't have the time to reconnect and reestablish our relationship. My next biggest regret is my sons didn't grow up knowing him. He was an awesome grandfather. As an uncle and great uncle he influenced many nieces and nephews.

We don't get to pick our parents but, if I had that option, I would have picked him.

I didn't get to know my father that well, either, even though he was at home and I had the opportunity. But he didn't impress me that much and I just didn't care. Now?? I might have made more of a chance, but I doubt it.

You might want to check your math. 94 Yes, I agree with you. I was blessed to have a wonderful relationship with him, but am sorry that your's wasn't the same. He taught us many things and we have great stories relating to him. What a patriarch to the family.

My relationship was strained but he was not distant. A large part of it was due to my mother. Theirs was not a happy union.

I'm so glad you were able to grow up when the wolf was at the end of the road instead of the front door.

My Dad's 98th birthday is today. I had a great relationship with him when I was little, not so great when I was a teenager (more my fault than his), and back to great again as I matured. I was lucky...

We were getting there especially after my parents divorced. A few more years would have made a lot of difference.

There was a lot of good. Hunting, learning to fly together, and sharing an airplane were high points. My early childhood and tween years saw us in financial hard times Like one Colorado winter we lived in a one room structure with a dirt floor built with tar paper over a wood frame. I don't remember indoor plumbing until I was eight.
