Fresh Air

I live in a small city surrounded by farms, feed lots, and dairy operations. Lots of “country” smells.

Yesterday called for traveling about thirty miles to see the dentist. Such a great start to the week, no?

This time of year the farmers are clearing their irrigation ditches of vegetation. The usual way is to burn them. In addition to the usual country smells, we have smoke. On the plus side, the air does clear your sinuses.

Spring seems to have arrived and the ground vegetation is turning green. The deciduous trees and bushes haven’t leafed out yet which is good; we will probably get at least one more snow storm. Springs snow storms tend to be wet and heavy.

We’ve seen a few days in the 70°’s and I’m enjoying having the windows open. The downside is the air is “fresh”.

Signs of Spring

In the years of off and on living in the Colorado Rockies, the arrival of Red Wing Blackbirds  always was my clue Spring was at hand. True, we might get more snowstorms and even a nasty blizzard, but the birds always made me feel cheerful.

This morning on my morning walk with Mr. Nose & Appetite, the nearby wetland has the early arrival birds. Roosting on the cattails, they are signing away. Made me smile.

Colorado has gone to “stay at home” and lots of people are out walking.  Knock on wood, none of my close family, in four different states; have come down with the virus.

Perverse humor. The State Lottery Claims Offices are closed until April 21st, for now. Imagine, winning big on the lottery and not being able to get the money! I’m a $10 per week gambler. Yes, yes, I’m bad at math!

Must Be Spring

We are seeing a profusion of the unofficial State flower on routes driven daily.

After six days of steady rain, everything is turning green. The rain, though I had to postpone some plans, was perfect for the crops and plant life in general. Soft, even rain around 2" per day. The Platte is running a bit high but clear, a good sight.

Lots of soft sweet smells as the leaves open and the flowering bushes bloom. Then, there is the aroma of freshly manured fields.

Birds are back, if they ever left, and lots of chirping.

There is an interesting piece of public art between the town Recreation Center  and Senior Center. A tribute to the agriculture in the area I suppose.

Decided to join the Senior Center. My health insurance has a "Silver Sneaker" benefit and my $22 annual Senior Center dues gives me free access to the Recreation Center. Way past time to start focusing on my physical fitness and start meeting new faces.
