Tenth Anniversary 

Sisty is far better at keeping track of dates. Heart problem, bradycardio, where the heartbeat is too slow to keep enough blood flow to the brain, caused me to face plant. Two days later a pacemaker was implanted. Spending Labor Day Weekend in ICU isn’t my fondest memory. No problems since, and with eight years of  battery life left, I should be good to go for awhile.

About a month later my nose was reworked from the several times I used it to hit a fist.

Nearly three years later I finally paid off the co-pays.

Bird Hunting

A neighbor was an avid bird hunter until heart problems, diabetes and losing a leg stopped him. I shared with him my one and only bird hunting experience. I was around 18, friends invited me to hunt pheasants, and one loaned me a single shot 20 gauge. We were hunting in a harvested corn field. I saw a pheasant running between rows and shot him. My friends were upset; explained that you must shoot them while flying. When the day was over we had harvested exactly one pheasant.

This neighbor relives working with dogs by scattering treats along the hall for Banner who now goes up the hall moving and sniffing from side to side.

A Memorable Wedding Ceremony

When the lovely Karen Larsen and I exchanged vows a thunderstorm was forming. During the reception it passed over the town of Steamboat Springs with golf ball sized hail. My aunt Nancy, peering out a window, exclaimed, “Well, I’ve always said when Frank got married all hell would break loose”.

We are a family noted for positive affirmations.

This blog seems to be getting comments that have little to say about specific points in the blog. Rather, the comments are political in nature. So long as the commenters put a name with their comments I’m letting them stand. So far, nothing has come from a liberal point of view. If some are, I will let them stand. What impact any of these comments will have on people, the 100 or so who view most  posts, is likely minimal.

Wyoming

Why so much Wyoming in this post? I was born in Wyoming, done and still do business in Wyoming, and come from a homogeneous geographic area split by an artificial line. (Northwest Colorado/Southwest Wyoming). I always feel at home in Wyoming.

Horse Drive

Next weekend will be in Maybell, CO for a family gathering. The excuse is the annual Sombrero Horse Drive, aka, sneering at dudes with too much disposable income.

Much of our extended family history centers around Maybell, CO and Moffat County. My late father was born down the road in Sunbeam, and his home of record when he was drafted was Skull Creek, CO. He was living outside Maybell when he died in his sleep, age 64.

Plan to take off later in the week. The Ute Indian tribe plan a blessing ceremony in the Sand Wash Basin NNE of Maybell where large herds of feral horses roam.  My sister wants to attend. Starts at 0530 Sunday morning.  Yikes!  Since their forefathers and ours were busy killing each other some 100+ years ago, it may be a surreal experience. They may, or may not, hold a ceremony in the Maybell Park.

We will go out to the old homestead and visit the family cemetery.

 A wildfire burned it last fall and the carefully torn down cabin was lost. The fire missed the cemetery area. 

The hillside dugout was completely gutted as was the old outhouse.

Whenever I pass the Rabbit Ears headed west on US 40 and into the Yampa River basin, I start to feel at home like no other place I’ve ever been. And I’ve been everywhere.

Depending on several factors, weather, roads, mud, commitments, etc. may take a day or two and drive via Irish Canyon to an area in Wyoming called Adobe Town in the Red Desert. This may be my best weather window to see the area.

My sister likes to beat on me about “over thinking”.  In truth I like my maps, plans, check lists and attention to the 6 P’s principal. Let me echo her recent Facebook posting.

Next week is a sit down with my current employer. Several changes have occurred or are forecasted. My route co-driver for the past three years quit. Fed up with problems being ignored. Depending on how the sit down goes, I may join him.

There will probably be a post or two before the trip, or not. Seem to have caught Old AFSarge’s AWOL muse.
