Free speech is important to me and very few comments are deleted. That said, total off topic comments suggest this blog isn’t being read by the commentator, just used to spread their message. Not happening! The occasional Anonymous comment may be published if it has, in my opinion, some value.  If you want your comment to be taken seriously, why not have the guts to put your name to it?

Wyoming Winter

Every year on I-80 between Rawlins and Laramie; Elk Mountain. 88 miles of extreme hazard. Summer? 90 mph wind gusts. Given Wyoming’s budget, last winter they had just four snow plow drivers for the route. Wages for employees are pitifully low.

Pro tip. Take US 30. Going east, get off at Ft Steele. Going west, get off at Laramie. The detour is twelve miles longer on a two lane road with no significant elevation change, and fourteen to twenty minutes more driving time. There are several passing lanes and the highway is well maintained.

I do this summer and winter. Very few 18 wheelers use this route. The few you encounter seem to be very professional.

Car Story

My shortest job.

My two sons had just left to spend the summer with their mother in Minnesota when a manager I respected offered me a job in the used car side of a Chevy dealership. I had two days off from the current job and decided to spend them checking out the job.

At that time the state had no control of salespeople with licenses, etc. Wild West.

First day, around 1:30 pm, a car came on the lot and parked towards the back. I went up and greeted the driver, who reeked of alcohol.

After making a pleasant greeting and extending my hand, the driver spouted off. From memory,

“I own this dealership and I don’t talk to fucking salesmen, got that?”

“Yes sir”, I replied. “Let me help you get inside before a customer sees your condition”.

 This provoked a steam of ugly words which ended when I buried my fist just under his right side short ribs. This helped him lose his liquid lunch, putting him on the path to sobriety.

From there I went over to the used car office and told them this lot wasn’t working for me, then over to my truck and departed.

On several occasions people have suggested I need anger management classes. Makes no sense, I already know how to get angry.

Currently going through the hassle of fighting unauthorized charges to my credit cards from places where I’ve cancelled my account. Some have been going on for two years. All have one thing in common; the speakers have Indian, like Southeast Asia, accents. Going forward, I will no longer do business with Indians. They join Iranian car dealers and Russian mechanics on my list.

 Does that mean I’m a bigot? Do I care if I am? No more dealing with people with the ethics of a starving piranha

President Donald Trump posted on Wednesday that two Democratic governors will not be invited to a bipartisan meeting and dinner next week. Gov. Jared Polis is one of them.

Having fun

The way sales are negotiated piss off many people. Oh, well.

You get an offer on paper from your manager, the infamous 4 square (https://www.youtube.com/shorts/MrD9CAG7vl0), and present it to the buyer.

I worked in a store where the desk man’s office was on the 2^nd floor. I was working a deal just under his office and he could hear everything being said.

My customer and her “second baseman” were twenty something Vietnamese. Our initial offer was met with, “You price is too high”.

 Show my shocked face! “No, that is a very fair price. We know we can’t make a lot of money from you Vietnamese”.  Giggles commence.

Now comes the drop. You scratch out the price and write in a slight lower price. Each one that is rejected leads to another lower price. Then I started adding and made the price higher.

“No, no, you go wrong way!”

Do it two more times. Suddenly, she grabs the pen and writes down a figure. Now comes the three step.

“You want to buy this car for that price?”, said in incredulous tone.

“When I bring this offer to my boss he will probably fire me”

“Okay, I will take him the offer but his office is right up there. Stay alert; he may throw me over the railing”.

At the desk Dan is laughing. Two visiting wholesalers there are also laughing. He then chews me out loud enough for the customer to hear down below.

 Going back down, I have an offer with a “courtesy bump”, probably some uneven number like $4162.76, and make the deal.

 So everybody is laughing but me because I’m terribly worried about getting fired and must stay in character.

About car sales. I was usually tops in monthly sales. That wasn’t my goal. My goal was to be tops in gross profit. People would ask me my “secret”.  “No, if I tell you it won’t be a secret”. What made me successful were two things.

1.    Attitude. People come to a car lot to buy a car. Let them!

2.    I can make almost anyone like me for 45 minutes.

On Thursday, the Trump administration finalized rules repealing the EPA’s endangerment finding — that dubious 2009 determination claiming six greenhouse gases threaten human health under the Clean Air Act. “We are officially terminating the so-called endangerment finding,” Trump announced, calling the policy exactly what it was: “disastrous.”

The EPA has become a millstone on our economy. Now many of these stultifying regulations can go away. The lingering question is, will they? I foresee judges blocking every effort as the leaches cling to their positions, income, and pensions.

Diesel

1983-1988 saw a number of small cars and trucks offered with diesel engines.

 One day a PFC stationed at Fort Lewis wandered onto our lot. After some conversation involving money, of which he had little, he landed on a 1983 Ford Escort 5 speed with a diesel engine. We did the test drive thing and went inside to do the paperwork.

As he was ready to leave, he said he planned to get a tune up kit and get rid of the rough idle!

 While not a complete soulless car peddler, I bit my tongue. Points.

 As you sat behind the steering wheel, the fuel gauge said, “Diesel Only”.

On both front fenders was a diesel emblem.

On the rear hatch was a diesel emblem.

 Partner, if you are so dumb you don’t know what “diesel” means you are beyond hope.

 Some estimates place the number of illegal aliens in Colorado at around 200,000. That number, IMO, is low. How many now will be self deporting?

For once, no woke issues, just developers vs NIMBY with a side of, “Not my Tax Dollars”.

West of Greeley alongside US 34, developers want to develop a sports, entertainment, and shopping complex. They want money from taxpayers for part of the costs (bonds, guarantees, whatever) and residents raised hell. Now the issue will go to a special election. Tricky bastards, they rigged the ballot headings so that a NO vote approves the plan and a YES vote turns it down.

Car Story

Herding cats.

Driving a motor home with a slide out extended shouldn’t happen. My herd of cats, aka sales crew said, “Hold my beer”.

 We used a 26’ motor home with the rear kitchen and bath removed for a mobile office. At the end of a sale, the crew that hadn’t brought their own vehicles would ride along to the next week’s location while I would drive to Longmont with all the deal jackets, drop them at the office, then go to my home in Brighton.

 0430 my cell phone went off. The call was from the Eagle County Sheriffs Department. Local dispatch had received several calls about a motor home eastbound on I-70 with the slide out extended. An officer found the motor home in the Eagle rest area. None of the occupants would confess to being the driver. The officer took the keys, left the drunks there to sober up, and took the keys to the sheriff’s office.

 With a solid two hours sleep, I took off for the 2 ½ hour drive to Eagle.

 After retrieving the keys and driving five minutes to the rest stop, the sales manager and I conversed.

 Good things about the situation. Little Hitler, aka the dealer, didn’t learn about it until long after we quit off sites sales. Our diligent work in maintain good relations with all law enforcement paid off. The motor home wasn’t impounded and the bunch of drunks weren’t arrested.
