I knew the Cirrus had a recovery parachute as an option, and I've seen video of it being tested. This is the first I recall of the system being used in a mid-air.
drjim The only other use I know of is a ferry pilot going to Hawaii who ran out of fuel. Second guessing, of course, but from where the midair occured, the Cirrus was dead engine gliding range of a runway.
Here's a listing of all the CAPS parachute uses which are now in the triple digits. Photos of the Cirrus show significant structural damage that might not have been from the landing and would have made controllable flight impossible.
