Getting Old – Getting Weak
Recently I had my hands on a M-1 Garand, a weapon I qualified Expert in 1963 Army Basic trailing. Automatically opening the bolt the Army approved way; I didn’t have the hand strength. That shocked me. Back in the day I spun one around like it was a toothpick. Now I felt the weight.
I still exercise but obviously not enough.
In my youth I was great at spotting game. In my dotage, porta-pottys.
I’ve been under the weather for about a week. Nothing serious, just a winter chest cold.
Still Have Youthful Skills
As always, YMMV
Sigh... Yeah, we're not 21, or even 41 anymore... Those 'skills' may still be there, but our ability to DO them is...less than predictable.
ReplyDeleteYes! I remember the days of (almost) setting the truck on a jack to change the tire.
DeleteHAH! Now I know where the cold I'm fighting off came from!
ReplyDeleteDidn't know I had it when I visited - sorry.
DeleteIn '66 my piece was the M-14. Similar in most ways, I think, except it wouldn't attack your thumb.
ReplyDeleteI've changed the words to "Old Rockin' Chair's Got Me". Now it's my recliner.
Carried a M-14 in Germany. Mine was a Springfield and junk. It was accurate but prone to jamming, overheating, and the stocks had a nasty habit of breaking at the pistol grip. M-14s made by other manufacturers seemed to be better. Lucky, I guess, but never had a M-1 thumb.
