Wild Hawgs and Such

Just when one hazard of the job tapers off, we get another, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

For the past six weeks or so the harvesting crews have been active. A convoy of one or more huge over wide combines on trailers, each followed by a truck pulling the harvester head, some 30’ wide, on another trailer. Several grain haulers, truck and 53’ trailer, followed by one of more RV’s, and miscellaneous vehicles moving from field to field. They can be difficult to pass.

Add the traffic going to and from Sturgis, SD, and the drive can be interesting.

One can admire those who make the trip all the way on motorcycles. Less so those pulling their motorcycles on trailers, and there are probably more of those than the riders. Posers.

A wet winter and spring is a blessing but……… Now a hot summer has arrived and the prairie is drying out just in time for the monsoon season.

Those thunderstorms produce a narrow, but intense,  path of moisture while the lightning goes everywhere. Lots of work for the fire crews. Lots of flash floods to trap the unwary. The Platte at Gurnsey is at near flood stage and the water muddy.

Wow, amazing colors in the sky! Good pictures.

I had a 2nd cousin who rode to Sturgis every year. He was an orthopedic surgeon. Made a lot of money, so I guess he could afford the 20 thousand dollar bike. I can't even imagine.

And it sounds treacherous as hell.
Maybe that's why they're nicknamed 'donorcycles'.

Donor cycles is apt. Rode one year around in Denver in my misspent youth.

Those are beautiful skies. Miss them. Sturgis was always either crazy or work. LOL. But the parade of bikers through Casper was always good for some rifle action when the gangs came through.

I don't willingly do crowds so never was interested even with all the "interesting" sights and parties.

Haven't heard much about biker gangs recently but I'm sure they are present.

Yeah, the corn crop looked pretty good when we were there the last time!

Last two weeks we have had hail storms that hurt a lot of farmers. Risky business and always has been.

Oh, yeah.

I grew up with a lot of "Farm Kids", and it was always too hot or too cold, too wet or too dry.

Cold winters. We had about a 1/4 mile walk from the barn to the house and cream separator. Sometimes the buckets of milk would be barely warm.

The Midwest winters close to the Great Lakes can be brutal.

Heavy snow, high winds drifting it, and high relative humidity just burns right through your clothing unless you're wearing the right kind of gear.

Indeed. Have been in Bemidji, MN in the dead of winter. Likewise Fond du Lac, WI.

Yep, all kinds of roadblocks, and idjits on donorcycles. That's NOT going to end well...

I enjoy bikes and have ridden them over the years. In my travels I see dead animals everyday. Don't think deer understand the concept of "share the road".
