Learning The Hard Way

Guess the driver never read one of these.

Do you think the driver will remember next time?

I saw that happen once in Southern Cal on a freeway on ramp. Little chickie in a hot car thought she'd turn right and beat the truck onto the freeway. Didn't work. She wasn't hurt, but her car was a mangled mess.

I try very hard to give trucks and their drivers courtesy and lots of room, since my brother and an uncle both drive for big trucking companies.

I was doing an ADA inspection in Oxnard, CA when a similar accident occurred. Since the camera was already out, and the scene part of what I needed photos to complete the inspection, took several photos and gave my information to the truck driver. Several weeks later had an insurance adjuster and two different lawyers asked for them. Young man drove all the way from Alabama to destroy his Mazda 626 in a stupid accident.

That is just priceless. Maybe the driver should just put a picture that up on his truck instead of the sign.

Good idea. Maybe paint car silhouettes under the sign for each vehicle wiped out like bomb missions on an aircraft nose.

I can't count the number of times that maneuver has been tried with me over the years.

One stands out in my mind. At the time I was in a conventional Freightliner when they used to put the turn signals under the mirrors.

I was at a stop light, on a two lane road and started to move and make my turn. A guy on a motorcycle screams my right, on the shoulder of the road, trying to beat me to the turn. Well, he whacks his helmet dead square on that right turn signal and the bottom of the mirror. Knocked his little rice rocket riding ass right off the bike!! I was still trying to keep from laughing as the police arrived.

He also ended up with some road rash.....

Sometimes there IS justice. The state trooper was still writing tickets as he sent me on my way.

Should have taken the time to video the young (very young) officer directing traffic. He was getting a real snit going; exasperated with us moron drivers. That makes as much sense as a cowboy getting angry with cows.
